Interactive map: Pre-Urban Renewal Knoxville, 1953

Screenshot - Mapping Black Removal in Knoxville

Created, digitized, and georeferenced by Chris DeRolph, this interactive map illustrates the density and complexity of pre-Urban Renewal Knoxville, Tennessee, within the boundaries of the Riverfront-Willow Street and Mountain View project areas.

Detailed occupant information for properties located within the boundaries of these two Urban Renewal projects was extracted from the 1953 Knoxville city directory. The year 1953 was chosen as a representative snapshot of the Black community, it being the last documented year prior to the authorization of the first Urban Renewal project in Knoxville.
